Wine in the City

WINE IN THE CITY

Discover how Bordeaux's history is intertwined with its wine, without even visiting the vineyards!

This tour begins at the Place de la Bourse, custodian of the wine classification since 1855. Here, we look into the history of Bordeaux’s riverfront port, and its role in wine commerce during the past millennium. Next, we hop onto the city's sleek, modern tram to go visit the Wine Museum, le Musée du Vin et du Négoce, housed in the 18th century wine cellar of a wine merchant's house. There, we delve into the history of Bordeaux wines and the role of the négociant in the preparation and distribution of these wines. After a guided tour through the museum’s exhibits, enjoy some delicious Bordeaux wines in the museum’s tasting room. We then stroll through the Chartrons neighborhood, the city's historic wine merchants and barrel makers district for the past 400 years. You will be able to see old wineries, built to age and blend Bordeaux wines, some of which are nearly 300m long! Today, they have been redesigned into apartments, shops, art galleries and universities. Fast becoming the city's chic neighborhood with cafés, open-market plazas and other surprises, the Chartrons is often paralleled to Paris's intimate Marais district because of its charm. The tour ends on a relaxed and fun note with an additional tasting in one of the neighborhood's lovely wine bars.

Wine and the City
My husband and I enjoyed a three-hour walking tour led by Matthieu. It was very informative and enjoyable, and introduced us to parts of the city of Bordeaux that we hadn’t visited before. Matthieu has considerable expertise in wine, a gift for sharing that knowledge in a non-intimidating way, and a wry sense of humor. He’s an excellent guide. I was also impressed how responsive Bordeaux Walking Tours was to my email inquiries. It’s a very professional organization, and we’d definitely book with them again.

No better way to discover Bordeaux
We had a long walk around the city with Hela (English native speaker) who knows really everything about Bordeaux, French history & wines. A very entertaining storyteller - we are really happy to discover Bordeaux this way. We now know far more about the city than the friends who have always been living here. And the info, the booking & paying thru website & SMS were so easy. 10 points !!!
